Protect 'green zone' marine conservation areas

Australia's Federal Government has announced plans to half the number of marine park green zones. Green zones are fully protected conservation areas, and are vital to marine conservation efforts. In the face of climate change and dying oceans, halving the number of green zones would be a terrible blow to the fight to preserve ocean life.

Green zones are described by scientists as the ''engine room'' of conservation. These fully protected marine parks deliver far more benefits to biodiversity than any other zone type. Without green zone status, marine areas become vulnerable to fishing, mining, and oil fuel drilling, all of which disrupt and damage the ecosystem. The current proportion of green zones is the minimum considered effective.

Please sign this petition to demand that the Australian government backs down on its destructive plans to half the number of marine park green zones. Australia can't afford to lose them, and neither can the planet.
Mr Andrew Broad MP:

Australia's plan to half the number of green zone marine parks is a decision that could have wide-reaching negative impacts on ocean life.

The plan ignores scientific evidence that the current ratio of green zones is the lowest possible for effective marine conservation. Halving the number of green zones also flies in the face of the worldwide urgent need to respond to climate change and dying oceans.
