Ask Cheyenne Frontier Days To Ban Cruel Steer Busting

  • by: Concerned Citizens
  • recipient: Cheyenne Frontier Days Committee, Cheyenne Mayor, City Attorney, City Council Members, Chief of Police

The Cheyenne Frontier Days (CFD) committee has a statement on its website which states in part:

"Cheyenne Frontier Days does not tolerate, condone, or permit actions that abuse animals."

This is a laudable statement.  However, it is also currently untrue.  The event known as Single Steer Roping, aka Steer Roping, aka Steer Tripping, aka Steer Busting, involves steers being roped, brutally jerked, flipped, slammed to the ground and dragged.

Steer Roping causes the most injuries of all rodeo events, including but not limited to broken legs, broken backs, broken necks, crushed trachea and internal injuries.

This event is indefensibly cruel, and a blatant violation of CFD's promise that "Cheyenne Frontier Days does not tolerate, condone, or permit actions that abuse animals."

Steer Tripping is held in only a small handful of states.  The event is mostly held during slack, again because the public does not like to see this level of brutality.  Even most rodeo fans do not support steer tripping.

The event is not allowed at the NFR in Las Vegas, NV, a result of the state veterinarian stating that there are too many animal injuries.

We the undersigned request that CFD to honor its promise that "Cheyenne Frontier Days does not tolerate, condone, or permit actions that abuse animals," by prohibiting Steer Roping.
