Action on Climate Change, despite Canada's objections

We, the people of Canada, are committed to the principles of responsible development and sustainability. We support the adoption of aggressive, meaningful carbon targets at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bali, Indonesia, December 3-14, 2007. Bold action on greenhouse gases is necessary to avert catastrophic climate change in the near future, jeopardizing the lives and livelihoods of millions around the world.
The worst impacts of climate change are likely to be felt by those regions and peoples who are least equipped to manage and adapt. As a nation rich in resources, ingenuity, and talent, Canadians have a moral obligation to act as a global leader in solving the climate crisis, even when this requires sacrifice and brave choices.
Recent events suggest that the current Canadian government under the Conservative Party leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper does not share this vision. We anticipate our government representatives in Bali will block progress on hard targets, attach arbitrary preconditions to any meaningful negotiations, and abdicate responsibility for Canada's role in promoting sustainable development.
We, the undersigned ask the UN Conference of Parties to ignore any negativity and rhetoric from Canada's Conservative Party delegation to the UN Climate Change Conference in Bali. We ask that negotiators craft binding targets and a meaningful document, even when this runs counter to the position taken by the Canadian delegation. In response, the people of Canada will make every effort to defeat the current Conservative Party government in the next election, and to pledge our commitment to the targets, agreements, and accords generated during the UN Climate Change Conference in Bali.
