U.S. Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) told the media that "at the heart of liberalism is the hatred of God." This comment is an outrageous insult to all who follow their faith toward policies of compassion and justice, and is not befitting a member of Congress.
We the undersigned, as people of faith, are deeply insulted by your comment "at the heart of liberalism is hatred of God." We demand a public apology.
We take our faith seriously, so seriously in fact, that we follow religious teachings to love one another, to care for the poor, to stand beside the outcast, and to seek justice for every member of society. We work for public policies that help the weakest among us. Our faith teaches that every person is a child of God and has gifts to offer, so we seek to include everyone, regardless of ability, race, gender, creed, and sexual orientation. Our love for God is what leads us into liberalism.
Micah 6:8 says that God requires us to seek justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God. Your comment was not just, nor was it kind or humble.
Please issue a public apology to all religious people in the great state of Missouri and beyond.
