Ask Tesco to Keep Carbon Label Pledge

Five years ago, Tesco promised to label all its products with their carbon footprints. This would have been enormously helpful for green shoppers, as choosing the most eco-friendly option isn't always easy.

However, in a move that doesn't show much commitment to either the environment or its customers, Tesco has now decided carbon labelling is "too much work". It has also blamed other supermarkets for not following suit, which is not a great excuse.

In fact, the supermarket giant is actually phasing out the carbon labels on the few products already done.

Carbon labelling would benefit the environment, ordinary shoppers who want to be green, and Tesco itself, whose reputation regarding green issues is already bit shaky. Making impressive pledges and then breaking them is not going to improve customer loyalty or Tesco's brand image.

Ask Tesco to show real corporate responsibility by sticking to its promises.
We the undersigned ask that Tesco abide by its carbon labelling pledge.

In 2007, Tesco promised to be a leader in responsible retail by labelling all its products with their carbon footprints. Dropping this project because of what sound very much like excuses does not do Tesco, its customers, or the environment much good at all.

We ask that you reinstate this pledge rather than finding reasons not to. It is perfectly possible to have all your products labelled within the next one or two years, and this would be enormously helpful to your customers.

Thank you for your consideration.
