Build our Wild Ducks an Island in Meve Estate Lake!
Meve Estate is a "new" land development, housing estate in the suburb of Beeliar, in the City of Cockburn, Western Australia.
A lake with community centre and water fountains ajoining a small shopping centre and sporting oval was established as a draw card to the community.
Building a massive man made lake will attract Ducks and Water Birds, which it has, to swim and nest in. This is obviously a draw card for families and visitors to wander down to the lake to admire the wildlife.
This however is not as romantic as it sounds. The Ducks and Water Birds in this lake have NO ISLAND in the middle for them to nest or sit on. The Ducks and Birds are vulnerable, especially the ducklings and chicks who are constantly interfered with by dogs, children and teenagers.
It would be a small financial outlay for the Council to establish a safe Island in the middle of the lake, for the saftey and preservation of these beautiful wild Ducks and Birds.

Dear Councilers,
We the undersigned wish to bring to your attention an issue of community concern and Animal Welfare in the Meve Estate Lake, in Beeliar.The lake was obviously established as a community draw card, and it works in that role, with families and visitors attending to view the lake and the wild ducks and water birds that have chosen to live there.
The lake however has not been planned to house these wild birds safely. In breeding season (Sept/Oct) families of young ducklings, have no Island in the lake to retire to for safety, and to escape dogs, and intereference by children and teenagers.On one visit 2 boys were seen chasing a duckling towards the shopping centre, as it was nesting on the pavers on the side of the lake. A family of Mallard Ducks are currently nesting with 9 ducklings, and again must nest on the side of the lake, constantly disturbed and threatened by some well meaning people, and many ill meaning youngsters. Dogs of course are a big threat and the Ducks and their offspring are left very vulnerable.
We call on the Council to establish an Island in the centre of the lake to give safety to the birds that are drawn there. This is our creation as a community, and we need to ensure that we offer them a small place to house themselves and their precious offspring, so that the community can continue to enjoy them for many years to come. And to ensure that their welfare needs are met.
