Funds for Treatment Centers, Not More Prisons
Drug offenses account for nearly 60 percent of the federal prison population and more than 20 percent of the state inmate population. With more than 2.3 million people behind bars and an annual cost of 45,000 per inmate, I propose funding for residential treatment centers in lieu of incarceration for non-violent offenders. To place a parent and two children in a family residential treatment program where they receive education, counseling, job and parenting skills would cost less than half of that and provides a solution to the ever increasing problem of addiction in our society.
We the undersigned, ask that you please consider the following petition as proof that we believe the current system is not working. We propose a better solution for the increasing problem of drug and alcohol addiction and its impact in our families and communities. We ask for special funding to be set aside for residential treatment centers for individuals and families, not more funds for even more prisons. Thank you very much for taking the time to read our concerns.
