PKU FOOD ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

PKU (phenylketonuria) is an inherited metabolic disorder, that, if untreated, causes brain damage and mental retardation. PKU affects the way the body processes food. Children with PKU can not process a part of protein called Phenylalanine. As a result, phenylalanine builds up in the bloodstream and causes the above mentioned problems. Because phenylalanine is found in many ordinary food products, a special diet is necessary for normal living. These foods are made with low to no phenylalanine. These foods are extremely expensive making it very hard for the average family to afford. Pennsylvania needs to join other states and add a government program and an insurance program to help parents of PKU children and also adults afflicted with this disorder help pay for food necessary for this diet.
