Our oceans have 270,000 tons of litter in them, and animals eat that every day. Beaches are ruined and species have become extinct and soon it will become irreversible. I created an entire public awareness campaign in my English class and I want to take action but I need help.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch weigh 87,000 tons by itself and its current is bringing in more trash every day. 87% of the ocean is dying and that includes coral reefs, dolphins, sea turtles and whales. One piece of plastic can take up to 1000 years to break down, and then it turns into microplastic which ends up in our food sources. By the time 2030 comes around, the damage we've caused to the oceans will be irreversible.
On Lake Erie's beachfront, I picked up 120 Black and Mild plastic mouth tips in less than 400 square feet. Birds can easily come down and swallow that, and it only takes 14 of those tips to kill a bird.
Innocent marine life has no business being caught in the middle of our worldwide issue. Companies need to start producing materials that are biodegradable and healthier for our oceans such as Cassava bags.
