Kiteboarding Access at Jones Beach

Kiteboarding is one of the fastest growing sports in America, and experts in the industry agree that the conditions on Long Island could make it one of the world's premier kiteboarding locations.

The Town of Hempstead recognized the appeal of kiteboarding and the unique characteristics that make Long Island beaches suitable for it when it used an image of kiteboarding as its June 2008 calendar shot (http://tinyurl.com/r8zwvk).  Additionally, kiteboarding on Long Island has been featured in innumerable local and national news outlets, from Fortune Magazine to CNN Money to Newsday, some examples of which are also attached. One of the local kiteboarding schools, Best Kiteboarding Center NY of Amityville, participated in the Marine expo last year at Jones Beach to help introduce the sport to the public and gain awareness. This was met with great support, personally backed by Assemblyman Joseph S. Saladino.

Kiteboarders in Jones Beach State Park were recently warned that the sport is prohibited there.  In response to that, the kiteboarding community would like to voice its support for establishing a contained, mutually agreeable location from which participants may launch their kites and proceed to the open water.  The group asks for no special privileges, and is eager to abide by regulations as do other groups which have been allowed to use State Park areas for their various activities.  As local taxpayers and responsible citizens who pay park entrance fees, the membership of this group would like to establish two small launching zones in areas not frequently used by other citizens enjoying the park facilities - one on the bay side and one on the ocean side.

The intent of the membership is to use the launch zones to get out onto the water, and then to proceed eastward.  The intention is not to ride at one spot but to use Jones Beach to access the incredible terrain.  A mere 200 feet of beach would be required for launch access on both sides of the causeway (see attached map for details at http://tinyurl.com/r8zwvk).

The number of kiteboarders in the New York area has grown (and continues to grow), including at least the individuals identified in the attached list. The community is as diverse as New York and includes individuals from all professions (e.g., the arts, banking and finance, medicine, fashion, high-tech, education, law).

The Great South Bay area has a unique appeal to kiteboarders in that the bayside offers miles of flat water, with the Oceanside only steps away. Kiteboarders worldwide are starting to visit Long Island to experience all that the Great South Bay area has to offer. This obviously increases revenues to the local business communities and towns, including during the quieter fall, winter, and spring seasons. The sport has given rise to at least two schools in Amityville, one of which (Island Riders) takes a special interest in teaching kids through camps and is dedicated to providing the ultimate kiteboarding experience for all ages and levels. The other, Best Kiteboarding Center NY, is part of the world's largest kiteboarding company. The Park's anticipated cooperation is necessary to maintain access to the Great South Bay and the surf riding terrain along the causeway and to promote the area's reputation as a premier riding destination.
