Tell Your Legislator To Support the FREED Act to Eliminate Eating Disorders

As many as 10 million females and 1 million males in the US suffer from an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia. The Federal Response to Eliminate Eating Disorders Act (FREED Act) is the first ever comprehensive bill to address eating disorders treatment, research, education and prevention. This important piece of legislation would help to fund training and education programs to teach clinical skills to assist in identifying and treating eating disorders; increase federal research and awareness efforts; expand Medicaid coverage for those afflicted by eating disorders; and provide resources to increase public awareness about eating disorders.

S. 481 was introduced into the Senate in March of 2011 and H.R. 1448 into the House in April of 2011. Please contact your legislators to encourage them to support these bills. By increasing understanding about eating disorders and implementing health screenings for eating disorders in schools, we can work to identify these devastating disorders earlier in children and help to prevent life-threatening illnesses.
