Greenland Should Have the Choice to Join the EU if It Wants, as an Alternative to US Conquest

Donald Trump seems increasingly intent on international conquest. First he attacked Venezuela with air strikes and abducted its president on January 3 - subsequently referring to himself as the Latin American country's 'Acting President' on social media. Now, he has made it clear he wants to expand his domain to include Greenland, a self-governing Arctic nation that is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

In fact, he's also stated outright that he's interested in invading Columbia, Cuba, Mexico, and Iran as well. As part of that, Trump has even declared, "I don't need international law," saying that the only things limiting his power were "my own morality, my own mind."

International leaders have tried to calm the intensity raging out of the White House, attempting to dissuade Trump. It doesn't appear to be working. Trump has said he intends to make Greenland part of the U.S. "whether they like it or not" and that U.S. action would happen "either the nice way or the more difficult way." He's even suggested he might use the U.S. military to violently, forcefully take over the massive icy island.

On Wednesday, January 14, leaders from the governments of the U.S., Greenland, and Denmark met in Washington, D.C. to see if they could find a way out of this nightmare. But the talks apparently ended without any resolution. Attendees have said that the U.S. remains adamant it will acquire Greenland one way or the other - while Greenland and Denmark insist this will never happen.

As the Prime Minister for Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said: "We are now facing a geopolitical crisis. If we have to choose between the US and Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark, Nato and the EU."

Some government experts and former ministers are suggesting the European Union should follow up on this by allowing Greenland to join the EU, if it genuinely wants to do so. Currently, Denmark is a member of the EU, but Greenland is not. As Trump increasingly targets Greenland and demands its acquiescence, the EU has a moral obligation to give Greenland the option to join its ranks. This would offer Greenlanders a proper alternative to U.S. military conquest - membership in a community based in diplomacy and cooperation.

It is up to Greenlanders to decide what they want to do with their country and their land. But one option laid out before them should be the possibility of joining the European Union. Sign the petition to urge EU leaders to offer Greenland EU membership if it desires it!
