Trump wants to put Senator Markwayne Mullin in charge of 240,000 employees, FEMA, the Coast Guard, TSA, ICE, and Customs and Border Protection.
Mullin has zero background in national security, law enforcement leadership, emergency management, or intelligence. His only qualification is loyalty to Donald Trump.

DHS is responsible for disaster response, counterterrorism, border security, and immigration enforcement. The person running it needs to know what they're doing and be willing to hold federal agents accountable when things go wrong.
Mullin has already shown he won't do that.
Earlier this year, federal immigration agents killed two Minneapolis residents, Renée Good and Alex Pretti. The shootings sparked national outrage and federal investigations. Lawmakers from both parties called for stronger oversight of immigration enforcement.
Mullin's response: he opposed any new restrictions on federal agents. He said he wouldn't "handcuff the agents from doing their job." Two people were dead and his instinct was to shield the agency, not demand answers.
That is who Trump wants running the largest law enforcement department in the federal government.
The Senate confirmation process exists for exactly this situation. When a nominee lacks the experience, independence, and judgment the job demands, senators have an obligation to vote no.
