Preserve the Broadwater

Citizens, residents and visitors to the Gold Coast are concerned about the environmental, social, economic and cultural impacts of a proposal for an onshore shipping terminal, hotels, casino, condominiums, marinas etc in the Broadwater and coastal areas such as Kirra as proposed by Gold Coast City Council Mayor and other development companies.
Objections to these development proposals include - The handing over of public open space in the Broadwater and coastal areas/Kirra for private benefit, the impact of massive dredging and construction on the marine/foreshore environment, loss of biodiversity, pollution, impact on south to north sand movements, the impact on existing diving, fishing, surfing and tourism businesses using coastal areas, increased traffic in a congested road system, costs to ratepayers/taxpayers for ongoing dredging maintenance, upstream flooding, the lack of credibility of economic benefits, and failure to consider the impacts of climate change.
We are requesting that the State Government advise the Gold Coast City Council to accept the massive negative economic, social and environmental impacts of the proposed terminal and hotel proposal and discontinue any investigations into any onshore shipping terminal developments along the Gold Coast and any commercial developments at Wavebreak Island, South Stradbroke Island and north of Seaworld Nara resort on The Spit and Kirra- instead that they preserve and promote the Broadwater and other coastal areas as essential recreational and open space assets for the city.

Dear Ms Simpson

I value natural areas and public open space. Further development on the Gold Coast would detract from it's attractiveness to me. This part of the Gold Coast is a peaceful and beautiful environment which should be left as it is, to be enjoyed by all who visit or live on the Broadwater.

Please act to insure the Gold Coast City Council does not go ahead with the Mayor Tom Tate's proposal to develop the few remaining areas of natural habitat and public open space.

yours sincerely
