Police say an Anderson man denied part of his girlfriend's tax refund strangled her until her pet pit bull bit him, then fatally stabbed the dog and her eight newborn puppies.

Anderson Police says officers arrested 46-year-old Dennis White on one count of strangulation and nine counts of animal cruelty. He was being held Thursday in the Madison County Jail on $100,000 cash bond. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.

Police say grocery store employees alerted officers when White came in covered in blood. They say White confined, battered, and choked his girlfriend until her dog, Coco, bit him, allowing her to flee but leaving Coco and her 2-week-old puppies behind.

White was out on bond from Randolph County on four battery counts and one of child molesting.
