Support Manitoba Midwives

Midwives in the WRHA and accross Manitoba have been operating without a contract for almost 2 years. It's time for us to speak up and be a voice for change. We need our provincial government to acknowledge, support and FUND the vital role midwives play in supporting expectant and new families in our province. We have 53 midwives operating in Manitoba, when there is demand enough to support 200 midwifery positions. It's time for us all to speak up. Here's what we want:

  • We want our health care system to pay our midwives fairly and competitively for the amazing work they do, so they will stay in our province.
  • We want our provincial government to guarantee funding for the midwifery program at the U of M.
  • We want funding for additional midwifery positions in Winnipeg so the current demand for midwifery care can be more adequately met
  • We want funding for more positions across Manitoba, including but not limited to: Selkirk, Portage la Prairie, Dauphin, Neepawa and Pine Falls so women have the option to birth in or near their home communities.

By adding your voices to mine, I hope that we can truly make a difference for families in Manitoba. Midwifery care should be available to any family that wants it. End of story.

Dear Honourable Minister for Health

Midwives in the WRHA and accross Manitoba have been operating without a contract for almost 2 years. It's time for our province to make a positive change. We need our provincial government to acknowledge, support and FUND the vital role midwives play in supporting expectant and new families in our province. We have 53 midwives operating in Manitoba, when there is demand enough to support 200 midwifery positions. This is unacceptable. Here is what we want from the WRHA and our government:

  • We want our health care system to pay our midwives fairly and competitively for the amazing work they do, so they will stay in our province.

  • We want our provincial government to guarantee funding for the midwifery program at the U of M.

  • We want funding for additional midwifery positions in Winnipeg so the current demand for midwifery care can be more adequately met

  • We want funding for more positions across Manitoba, including but not limited to: Selkirk, Portage la Prairie, Dauphin, Neepawa, Pine Falls and across Northern Manitoba so women have the option to birth in or near their home communities.

I appreciate you taking our concerns into consideration. Myself and families across Manitoba appreciate your time and attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Alicia Thwaites
