Demand a Ban on Single Use Produce Sticker

Produce labels are both those small Price Lookup (PLU codes) labels stuck to single pieces of fruits and vegetables as well as the wire labels wrapped around bunch vegetables and leafy greens that you find in grocery stores and supermarkets. While deemed safe for contact with food by the FDA, these micro thin, non-biodegradable labels made of vinyl and plastic are creating needless plastic waste in our ocean, streams, rivers and land, causing problems in downstream waste disposal, and are polluting both commercial and residential composting facilities. In addition to this, these stickers, if consumed, are dangerous to children, pets, birds, fish and all manner of wildlife.
While grocery clerks may find these ID stickers necessary to expedite the checkout process, there are better and more planet friendly options including the use of compostable labels, an FDA-approved laser etching technology, a ‘washable’ sticker, or simply going back to visual identification of fruits and vegetables.
By signing this petition, you will be telling the EPA, FDA, Consumer Advocacy groups, and members of the National Grocers Association that you stand behind eliminating these polluting, dangerous and unnecessary labels while taking steps toward eliminating all Single Use Plastics (SUP).
