Kenyans have, unfortunately, been inured to the thinking that the very rich in our society can get away with anything--from murder and pillage to unabashed looting of the country to acts of mass violence and crimes against humanity.
Similarly, there is a national consensus that justice goes to the highest bidder, where people with money and connections (and these two are not mutually exclusive) determine what is justice the law be damned. The investigative authorities (the police and the office of the DPP) are also known to either bungle cases or conduct woefully pathetic investigations that let looters, thugs, drug barons and murderers get away for a song.
We passed a great Constitution last year and only recently had the good grace of having a Chief Justice and Deputy Chief Justice in the persons of Dr. Willy Mutunga and Nancy Baraza respectively.
This notwithstanding, real and progressive change in Kenya must come from below--from Wananchi who, collectively, are the Wenyenchi. Kenya is because you and I are and because we are Kenya is. The rights to life, expression and assembly are natural and cannot be given or taken away by the government, agents of the government or nabobs of wealth who usually conduct their affairs outside the law.
However, you and I know that far too many Kenyans have been killed senselessly, maimed, tortured, deprived of property and comfort, and denied expression.
Let us regard the death of Mercy Chepkosgei Keino as the last straw on the camel's back--let us all, in one accord, rise up and demand that Truth is dicovered and Justice served and seen to be served in this case. Let us demand the same of all other victims of injustice, thuggery and corruption in our dear country.
