Colombia's Proposed Law Would Protect Octopuses from Cruel Commercial Farming

Colombia could pass an important ban on humans locking octopuses, squids, and cuttlefish inside intensive farming operations and raising them for slaughter. This is an important step forward for protecting animals and preventing cruelty.

We must urge lawmakers in Colombia to vote "Yes" on Senate Bill 008 of 2026!

Intensive farming operations are harmful for a number of reasons. First, cephalopods are marine animals that are meant to live freely, with the oceans as their playgrounds and home. It is not right for humans to corral them and deprive them of this freedom. Octopuses in particular are incredibly smart - why would we subject them to this torment? All just to satisfy our own tastebuds? That is the definition of selfishness, sadism, and cruelty. We must be better than this.

Locked inside these aquatic cages so they can one day be killed, these incredible animals quickly begin to show signs of stress and trauma. For example, they often become aggressive and even cannibalistic - attacking each other in response to what humans are doing to them.

Also, such farms hurt the environment and local ecosystems. Much like with fish farms, these commercial-scale operations can lead to destructive pollution. These facilities typically produce phosphorous and nitrogen waste, and then dump these contaminants right back into the surrounding waterways. This can be deadly for other sea critters, while also disrupting the larger delicate food chain.

Luckily, many countries, including in Latin America, are opposing cruel octopus and cephalopods commercial farming. Both Chile and Mexico have introduced similar legislation.

Sign the petition to urge lawmakers in Colombia to approve Senate Bill 008 of 2026, which would ban commercial farming of octopuses, squids, and cuttlefish! We must prevent suffering and protect the rights of animals!
