TO PROTECT AND PROMOTE THE LEBANON MOUNTAIN TRAIL

The Lebanon Mountain Trail (LMT) is the first long-distance hiking trail in Lebanon.  Extending 440 km from Al Qbaiyat in the north to Marjaayoun in the south, the LMT crosses 70 towns and villages, three protected areas, dozens of cultural and natural heritage sites, including one World Heritage Site.

The LMT offers hikers countless opportunities to enjoy Lebanon mountain landscapes and discover rural traditions and practices.  The trail encourages and promotes responsible tourism and helps expand economic opportunities in trailside communities; e.g., using the services of trained local guides, buying local produce and handicrafts, staying in local guesthouses and partaking in local festivals.

The LMT is under threat.  Sources of pressure including urban sprawl, the paving of old foot trails and agricultural dirt roads, the construction of high-altitude roads, waste disposal, quarrying, and forest fires.

Therefore, please sign this petition to demand the Government of Lebanon --Parliament, Ministries, Urban Planning agencies and Municipalities-- to take active measures to protect the trail from unwanted development and help conserve its unique natural and cultural heritage. Collectively, we can promote the trail as a world-class tourism destination for generations to come.
