To support the people and culture of Tibet suffering greatly under Chinese occupation and to strengthen the bond of affection and solidarity expressed by Glastonbury Festival and the good people of Glastonbury towards Tibet and the Dalai Lama.
Like Glastonbury the Tibetan capital of Lhasa has been a site of pilgrimage since ancient times, it too is a place of sanctity, historic home to the Dalai Lama and having sacred waters and hills.
As a gesture of support for Tibetan culture anyone who cares for human rights. justice and freedom would welcome greatly a decision by Glastonbury Town Council to declare occupied Lhasa, Tibet its twinned town.
Attention Of
Glastonbury Town Council
Somerset
England
Dear Sir/Madam,
We the undersigned support the proposal that your Council adds Lhasa, Tibet as a twinned city with Glastonbury.
We do so knowing that both communities are based in sacred locations, places of pilgrimage since ancient times, home to historic legends and prominent religious centers.
The good people of Glastonbury and its associated Festival have long maintained a bond of appreciation and solidarity with the Tibetan people and their culture. In 2015 the Dalai Lama attended the festival and was accorded a wonderful reception.
It is hoped that in light of these connections and considering the plight of the Tibetan people; whose circumstances are internationally known and of concern to all who value human rights, freedom and justice, you will decide to add the name of Lhasa as a city twinned with the town of Glastonbury.
The Town Council is not being asked to approach the Chinese authorities for such an association but, as a humanitarian expression of solidarity with Tibet, its culture and people, to add the name of Lhasa with those of Labelia and Patmos already twinned with Glastonbury.
