Abolition of 're-registration fees' for cars in Mauritius

In Mauritius, there is a major problem concerning registration of vehicles. As you all know a vehicle can only be registered once in a country and have a specific plate number (given by the National Transport Authority in Mauritius).

However, each time a vehicle is traded in Mauritius, the buyer is urged to pay registration fees for a vehicle which has already been registered in the country bearing the same plate number. Thus, vehicles keeps on re-registering themselves in a single country each time their ownership changes, whereas only a transfer fee should be paid for the transfer of ownership. (e.g a car which has previously been owned by 10 owners, all the 10 owners have paid registration fees for a vehicle which should have been registered only once in the country. Moreover, the registration fees varies and depends on the Cylinder Capacity (cc) of the vehicle, i.e the higher the cylinder capacity, the more you pay. Furthermore, Speed cameras are set almost everywhere across the country, whereby the maximum speed allowed on Highways is 110 km, even 80 km in some places and 60 km on Main Roads.

In addition to it, vehicles of any cylinder capacity are urged to respect the speed limits sets, and those who exceeds the speed limits pays fines for the infractions caused. Hence, why should car owners of higher cylinder capacities (cc) pay higher road tax and higher registration fees since the road is used in the same manner like it is being used by vehicles with lower cylinder capacities and respects the speed limits as well.
