Airlines: It’s Time for Safer, More Respectful Air Travel for Women

  • recipient: airlines and the media.

Flying should feel safe and comfortable for everyone — yet too often, women experience discomfort, harassment, or a lack of privacy in the tight, confined spaces of airplanes.

Many women report feeling uneasy when seated next to men who invade personal space, spread their legs into others' seats, or ignore physical boundaries. Even something as simple as getting up to use the bathroom can become stressful when having to crawl over strangers.

In addition, the state of airplane toilets is often unacceptable — and women, who may need to sit or use hygiene products during a flight, are disproportionately affected.

We are calling on airlines to take practical, inclusive steps to ensure safer and more comfortable travel for women by:
1. Introducing an optional "Women's Only" section for passengers who prefer it.
2. Providing at least one Women's Only restroom on each aircraft.
3. Ensuring better cleanliness and maintenance of all lavatories, especially on long flights.

These small changes could make a huge difference in how safe, respected, and comfortable women feel when traveling.
