Application made for large housing development at Lodge Hill on the Hoo Peninsular in Kent.
Surveys have shown that nightingales have declined by 60% in the UK between 1995 and 2012.
Preliminary results of a British Trust for Ornithology survey in 2012 show this as probably one of the most important sites for this species in the UK.
84 singing males were recorded on and adjacent to the proposed development site.
Nightingales nest on or near the ground so even outside of the development site they would be vulnerable to predation and disturbance from cats and dogs.
