Commissioner Dugan: Shut Down the Route 9 Kennels

Amy Lane visited the kennels on Monday, 7/9/12 to check on a litter of 6 mixed breed puppies that were dropped off at Animal Control on Friday, 7/6/12. To her dismay, she found the puppies crammed into a 2'x4' cage inside the house with the air conditioning turned off. This was following a weekend of triple digit heat. The puppies had no food, no water, and only had enough space to stand. The cage and two bowls were covered with diarrhea. All 3 Animal Control officers were off duty that weekend and the only care the animals at the Rt. 9 kennels received since Friday was by community service folks. This means animals were tended to only once a day. Therefore, these puppies were inhumanely caged for 3 days with no air conditioning, no access to food or water except perhaps two times over the 3 days. Amy Lane called Seth Place, the Humane Officer for the Sheriff's department, but her call was never returned. She left the kennels and went directly to the State Police to file a complaint of animal neglect/abuse. These puppies have since been moved to the Morgan County Humane Society where they are receiving appropriate care.
