*****Update; 3/0/20  Lindsey's  defense  attorney  Berger is filing an insanity defense. The court has ordered two doctors to evaluate Lindsey for competency and insanity. If the family can provide an address where he would be residing, the court will review modifying the bond.

Cammie, 3 month old puppy was tortured &  brutally killed by an 18 year old on 1/31/20 in South Bend, IN. Jeremy Lindsey put her in the family clothes dryer because she was being mean to the family cat. She was a 3 month old puppy!
He is charged with killing a domestic animal and torturing or mutilating an animal — both Level 6 felonies — in addition to a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty.

Lindsey's mother picked Lindsey up from school that day and took him home after the teen said he wasn't feeling well, according to court documents. When Lindsey's mother returned to the house later in the day, he told her that the family's puppy, Cammie, was dead. Lindsey's mother found Cammie on the couch, "all scraped up as if it had been hit by a car." The family buried the puppy in the yard, but when Lindsey's mother went to do laundry that evening, she found the dryer was, "full of hair and blood" and called the police. When questioned by officers, Lindsey admitted to putting Cammie in the dryer and turning it on because the puppy was "being mean" to the household's cat. He had only been in the family home for a few weeks. His parents where shocked & had no idea he was capable of doing something like this.
The sentencing range for a Level 6 felony is six months to two and a half years, while a Class A misdemeanor carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail.
Bond was set 2/3/20. Lindsey will be held in the St. Joseph County Jail under $1,000 bond and will be under pretrial supervision. The judge explained in court that given Lindsey's age and because he has no prior convictions, the court felt the $1,000 bond was a fair amount. This seems light considering the violent nature of the act he committed against the puppy.
South Bend has a history of letting animal abusers go with a slap on the wrist, if that. We can not let this happen again! Here's an example;
In 2015 A South Bend woman was charged with two counts of animal cruelty and two counts of animal neglect after allegedly abandoning a dying dog in a garbage bin. One dog was in such bad shape it had to be euthanized, both dogs were underfed. She posted a $400 bond and was released from the St Joe Co jail. In the end all she received was probation even though it had all been caught on a surveillance camera.
I have no doubt this young man suffers from some type of mental illness and needs help. But what he did is unfathomable and he must be held accountable for his actions.
The links between early cruelty to animals and later violent and aggressive crime have been documented for decades. This case should be a dual issue. Mental health and animal abuse.
We need your help. Please sign the petition and share! We are demanding that Judge Stanford hands down a suitable sentence for the above charges and orders this young man to seek mental health help. We can't let the system fail Cammie.
