Educate young people: domestic violence isn't "normal"

Young girls who get beaten by their boyfriends think their abusers are behaving ''normally'', welfare workers in regional Western Australia say. Girls as young as 12 are suffering domestic violence in communities where it is an expected part of life.

Advocates are calling for government-funded educational programmes to give young people a better foundation for their relationships. Please sign this petition to demand that the government funds a pilot scheme to teach young people about domestic violence and relationships.

According to local community workers, young boys see their fathers beat their mothers, and grow up thinking this is how they should act in relationships. The consequences are devastating. Teenage romances are warped into control and cruelty. Reported violence ranges from punching to knife attacks.

The right education can help save the next generation from this horrific cycle of violence. Please sign to ask that a pilot educational scheme be set up to offer a better future for young girls in regional Western Australia.

The Australian Government:

The shocking rate and severity of domestic violence against young teenage girls in regional Western Australia reflects a deeply entrenched inter-generational cycle that needs breaking.

A pilot educational scheme must be established to teach young people about domestic violence and healthy relationships.
