The Ten Commandments are a moral compass for people and society as a whole. Removing them breeds an atmosphere of disorder and puts those who are responsible for their removal in a destructive position.
These Ten Commandments are a historical document, even to people who do not believe in the power behind them. A historical document should be placed on the wall to show students from that which we have come. Furthermore, the student body had donated the Ten Commandments and felt that the representation of those laws was needed in Marion Harding. When the document was removed, it was an infringement upon the free exercise of religion given in Amendment I of the Bill of Rights. And while it may be considered unconstitutional for the document to be placed on the wall initially, the document had remained in its spot for 10 years before action was taken against it. Therefore, the issue is offensive to Christians and other Western religions rather than their counterpart.
This petition is to either replace the original plaque on the wall or place a new plaque in its place. Many students, teachers, and parents have shown contempt and disgust with the happenings, and feel like they need a voice in what occurs next.
