Don't Let Politics Undo The Important Recovery of Gray Wolves

A new executive order has given the Secretary of the Interior just 90 days to decide whether gray wolves and Mexican wolves still deserve protection under the Endangered Species Act. If the review concludes that recovery criteria have been met, the order directs federal officials to begin stripping away those protections entirely. Wolves are a keystone species, meaning their presence shapes entire ecosystems, influencing prey populations and the broader balance of the wild landscapes they call home.

Sign the petition urging the Department of the Interior to base this decision strictly on sound science, not political pressure, and calling on the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to continue standing firmly behind the state's commitment to protecting these wolves.

This review originates from an executive order focused on supporting ranching interests, raising real concerns that the outcome could be shaped more by politics than by actual wolf population science. Federal protections currently remain in place while the review is underway, but that could change quickly once the 90-day window closes.

Gray wolves and Mexican wolves have spent decades slowly recovering from the brink of extinction. Rushing a delisting decision within a matter of months, driven by outside political pressure rather than rigorous science, risks undoing that progress and destabilizing the ecosystems that depend on these animals to thrive.

Gray wolves and Mexican wolves help hold entire ecosystems together. A single executive order could unravel decades of recovery work in just 90 days. Protections must stay in place, guided by science, not political pressure.

Sign the petition and demand that federal and state wildlife officials keep their protections firmly in place.
