Animal abuse in Greece - Dogs used as scarecrows

According to reports in newspapers and witness accounts, the greek island of Skyros is hell on earth for the unfortunate dogs used as scarecrows by local farmers. According to a tourist, who took pictures of this cruel practice, dogs are chained to barrels, which are their only shelter from sun and heat. They have barely any water and they are starving. Apparently these animals are chained in the middle of nowhere by farmers and they are expendable. As soon as they die, they are replaced by new puppies which will suffer the same fate.

The mayor of Skyros, Miltiadis Xatziyannakis, states that he knows of the problem but doesn't know what to do about it (!). He claims he doesn't know to whom he can turn for help and that he can't confiscate the animals as they are not strays. They belong to farmers that tie them there to keep the sheep from running away. Nevertheless, this is an illegal practice and these animals are protected by a law that none seems eager to  respect.

Dear Mayor, Miltiadis Xatziyannakis,

We, the undersigned, will boycott the island of Skyros and not visit until you resolve the issue with the starving and dying dogs chained by farmers.

It is in your power to make the difference and apply the law. There are AR groups in Greece that can help you fight this cruel practice and stop those people that create a bad reputation for your island by killing innocent beings. If somebody abuses an animal, it is against the law and he/she should be punished.

I will do everything I can to spread these news and stop people from visiting your island for tourism, as long as you and y
