Work With Aboriginal Communities to Combat Social Problems

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced a new "intervention" program in the Northern Territory -- renewing the policy to help indigenous communities started four years ago under the Howard government.
Gillard's program will continue work to keep indigenous children in school, fight alcohol abuse and combat crippling unemployment in the Northern Territory. She has promised that, this time, the government will actually consult with Aboriginal elders, communities and victims of abuse the plan is purportedly helping.
The Northern Territory needs help. Unemployment among indigenous communities far outstrips that among non-indigenous Australians and educational opportunities are scare and quality is poor. But Australians must hold Gillard accountable for fulfilling her promise to collaborate with communities in the Northern Territory.
Support PM Gillard's efforts to collaborate with Aboriginal communities to better the lives of Australia's indigenous people.
Dear Prime Minister Gillard,
I applaud your continued support of the "intervention" to help indigenous communities in the Northern Territory fight truancy, unemployment and abuse. I am especially happy to hear that your administration plans to consult with elders, community leaders and the victims you're trying to help in planning and implementing the policy.

The problems faced by indigenous communities are daunting, but the potential that could be unleashed if they are addressed would be great not only for the Northern Territory but for all of Australia.
However, it's critical that your government gets buy-in at the local level from the people you're helping. Please continue your efforts with work with Aboriginal communities to better Australian citizens' lives and expand opportunities.
