Join the Fight: Protect LGBTQ+ Healthcare Now

Healthcare decisions should always be made between doctors and their patients — without interference from politicians and bureaucrats. Where Congress does have a role is in fully funding programs and public health infrastructure that have been proven to work and ensuring that best practice, medically necessary care is available to all.

As federal lawmakers work on the appropriations process that will determine how our tax dollars will be spent, the Human Rights Campaign is fighting hard to ensure PrEP is funded, defend access to gender-affirming care and protect critical LGBTQ+ health programs.

In the next 100 days, HRC members, supporters and allies will be participating in trainings with subject matter experts, lobbying legislators, mobilizing community members and more. Specific priorities for this campaign include:

  • Advocating for the PrEP Access and Coverage Act
  • Fighting for the Transgender Health Care Access Act
  • Supporting HIV funding in federal policy
  • Defeating all anti-LGBTQ+ riders in any appropriations bills

LGBTQ+ communities continue to face significant health disparities driven by discrimination, poverty and unequal access to healthcare services. These disparities appear across multiple health indicators, including mental health outcomes, chronic disease rates and HIV prevalence.

Public health programs — particularly Medicaid and federal HIV initiatives — have helped to address these disparities. But federal and state lawmakers have been inconsistent at best and hostile at worst when it comes to ensuring that these programs are fully funded and able to do their important work.
