Drop Charges Against Bree Newsome, Woman Charged with Taking Down the Confederate Flag

In the wake of the racially motivated murder of nine innocent people at Emanuel AME Church, South Carolinian Bree Newsome took direct, nonviolent action Saturday June 27, 2015, to remove a confederate battle flag from the grounds of the Charleston Capitol.

The flag, whose fate is to be decided by South Carolina legislators later this summer, is a divisive symbol and a painful reminder of persistent racism, discrimination, and violence. It was to fly over a pro-confederate rally, and, indeed, was once again raised following Bree’s arrest.

As Bree put it:

"It's time for a new chapter where we are sincere about dismantling white supremacy and building toward true racial justice and equality."

Bree Newsome is fighting to end the official sanction of a symbol of white supremacy. Please stand with her and urge Charleston Police Chief Gregory Mullen to drop any charges against her.

Dear Police Chief Mullen,

We, the undersigned, demand that charges against Bree Newsome be dropped.
