Support the Safe Climate Act

With the introduction of a new, science-based bill to reduce greenhouse gas pollution, now is the time to push Congress to act on the global warming crisis and help the Polar Bear from extinction. Please urge your representative to cosponsor the Safe Climate Act.
I am writing to ask that you cosponsor the Safe Climate Act, H.R. 5642, because I am concerned about the growing threat of devastating global climate change. Global warming threatens everything that we care about in this country, including our environment, public health and safety, and our future economic prosperity.

Plants and animals worldwide are threatened by rapid global warming and related ecological changes. Species from the polar bear to Caribbean corals are threatened with extinction. If we do not greatly decrease greenhouse gas emissions, 33 percent of the world's species may be committed to extinction by the year 2050.

The World Health Organization estimates that as of the year 2000, more than 150,000 deaths per year worldwide are attributable to global warming, and this number will continue to grow. Increasingly violent storms, increased weather variability such as droughts and floods, and higher temperatures are occurring in this country because greenhouse gas concentrations are now at their highest level in more than 650,000 years.

These impacts of global warming are unacceptable, and I urge you to cosponsor the Safe Climate Act, H.R. 5642, introduced by Rep. Henry Waxman. This bill sets targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions below the global warming danger point. The targets would be achieved through a flexible, economy-wide cap-and-trade system and an emphasis on renewable energy, energy efficiency and cleaner cars.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent issue.
