STOP THE COUP IN BRAZIL!

  • recipient: TO BRAZILIAN CONGRESSMEN AND THE PRESIDENT AND THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE OF THE UNITED STATES

Brazil and its democracy have been under attack since the 2014 elections, when president Dilma Rousseff was reelected with the majority of the popular vote. Since then, the opposition has been looking for means to oust her from power, making it impossible for the legally elected president to govern and put in place policies that are absolutelly necessary to the social, economical, cultural development of Brazil.

On Sunday, April 17th. a new chapter on the coup has been completed, with the approval of an impeachment process that has no legal basis, to the point of having the OAS - Organization of American States declaring illegal the process of impeachment of president Rousseff, over whom no criminal accusations can be made, much less proved.

Some feel as if giving a word and going against the impeachment process going on in Brazil at this time is a way of interfering with its sovereignity. It is not. Brazil is not an island isolated from the rest of the world, the events that determine its future are bound to deeply affect its neighbors and have consequences in the international system; not to mention the enormous steps back to a time when Brazilian people was denied everything, even the hope for a new future.

Just as it happened with the military dictatorship, which left millions of dead people - men and women -, tortured other millions of Brazilians, new documents surfaced proving United States participation in the undermining of Rousseff's government (https://theintercept.com/2016/04/18/after-vote-to-remove-brazils-president-key-opposition-figure-holds-meetings-in-washington/).

It’s urgent to pressure the U.S. government to voice a clear opposition to the coup in Brazil.

Please, think of your own and consider if you would like the world to sit back and watch while the Constitution, the legal system, and the Democracy of your country are assassinated in front of a mainstream media more interested in saving its own debts by having a new, corrupt, government in place in Brazil, instead of a legally elected government that shall be respected. This is what is happening in Brazil now. Please, join your voice to stop this crime against Democracy. Urge Brazilian congressmen and the United States govenment (that declares itself a protector of democracy all over the world, even waging endless wars all around the world under this excuse) to respect the mandate of president Dilma Roussef and the fact that she was legally elected by popular vote.

More than defending the government of Dilma Rousseff, this petition is about the defense of Democracy.
