Stop school bear hunt raffle!

Scorning the usual bake sales, car washes, etc., Noble High School in North Berwick, Maine, is sponsoring a bear hunting raffle to raise money to send music students on a trip to NYC. In light of the number of tragic school shootings that have taken place in the U.S., for a school to associate itself with any activity supporting guns is shockingly inappropriate. Bear hunting is particularly cruel and inhumane in Maine, where unsportsmanlike practices are used that have been outlawed in every other US state.

Do we want to teach our young people to achieve their aspirations through hard work so that they value their own achievements or do we want to teach them to use guns and the exploitation of animals? Students themselves are selling tickets for this event and the owner of a chain of bear hunting camps in Maine is reaping the reward of advertising this school connection in hunting magazines sold nationwide and abroad. Although the alternative of photographing a bear is allegedly offered, this isn't mentioned in the web advertising nor have ads been placed in photography or travel magazines.

Please help Another Chance in our efforts to call a halt to this ill-conceived and unacceptable fundraising attempt. If you are a resident of Berwick, Lebanon, or North Berwick, Maine, please sign this petition. If you live elsewhere please sign our petition for non-residents at

We, the undersigned taxpayers and residents of MSAD #60, ask that you put a halt to the Noble High School bear hunt raffle and require the school to find other means of fundraising now and in the future. If the hunt proceeds, we will think carefully before approving any future school budgets on voting day.

This has got to be one of the most idiotic things i have ever read. In what sick mind, is it right to raise money through bear hunting!?! What kind of morals do you have?! Bear hunting should be illegal. Our enviroment is in enough danger as it is right now, and our ecosystems have never been so fragile. We do not need more people to go out hunting, and killing innocent lives just for the sake of fun. Don't you have anything better to do then go killing animals mercilessly? The school is to blame. What kind of self respecting school administrator would approve of such a way to raise money? How did the school board approve? There are always other ways to raise money. Killing innocent animals is never the answer! and certainly encouraging children to use guns, is a very responisable thing to do, that is, if your insane. We let ignornant people like that influence the young minds of our nation and then we wonder why our society is so messed up. People have no respect for life. That has to change. Save the bears, save the animals, and save our planet!

encouraging children to use weapons by schools is irresponsible and stupid then the sad part is that the bureaucrats of that district wont think anything wrong with this scenerio until that child decides that its also ok to turn that weapon against a human.Maybe even not then they'll probably blame on tv instead how sad.Killing defenseless animals for sport is wrong and teaching a child to be a murderer makes me sick to my stomach

Noble High School disturbing ways of fundraising. A couple of weeks ago , an article in the Weekly Sentinel announced that the Music department of Noble High was planning a trip to a New York city cultural event for 200+ students . In order to raise money, an internet raffle was concocted advertising the prize : a six days bear hunt under the guidance of a seasoned bear hunter who son’s owns a camp with 50 bear sites ( or if you didn’t want to hunt and if you were the winner you could receive $1000 or just take pictures...) really ? who are we kidding? On the internet there is no limits and one can attract anyone willing to travel here.. Bear hunting to me is as outrageous , as cruel as the hunts of elephants, whales , seals and other endangered species of animals. It is done by training the bears with twinkies and doughnuts to come to the sight, where later on the hunters can come and easily shoot the hungry trained bears. Is that a sporting event ? is this, as a hunter mentioned at the school committee meeting , teaching responsibility to our youth? I am a retired educator, I know the joys, benefits and all the problems of educational trips with students, as I know about the challenges of fundraising. But I also know that as educators we are role models ; our behaviors, our actions speak to the whole community, we are the ones who open the doors to the future of our children, we inspire them , we teach them respect for our past and respect for their future, respect for our planet, all its people and all its creatures. We also live in a very fragile ecosystem, we are bursting at the seams, and we know so many species are disappearing at an amazingly high percentage, We need to help each other and help nature, our mother earth, not go on destroying it. We cannot accept that our schools condone the cruel, horrendous killing of bears as the only way to raise money. If baking cookies ( by moms mostly), is understandingly outdated and may not be right for a high school, how about involving the kids themselves to do some appropriate snow shoveling or other kinds of work to deserve that trip. How about asking parents , teachers and the students themselves for ideas, aren’t we creative people ? As of to day, different concerned citizens groups already have been in front of the school board twice asking to cancel the internet advertisement, asking Noble High to cut itself from this internet raffle which is a specific personal commercial ad. ( is this really legal , who is controlling it?) I do not know but it is very disturbing on too many levels. The school board has listened and nothing has changed . As a retired teacher /counselor I am appalled by this association linking this school and its students to killing, and to guns. We, teachers are mandated by law to report on any act of cruelty or of misconduct that could harm our students, well, right here I feel I have to report on this act of barbarism , which I know is harmful to all our children. Schools should have nothing to do with this. Schools are the place that instills the joy of learning..there is no joy in killing. I wonder how Columbine High School’s teachers, parents and students and any other campus where students decided to shoot others , would stand on this issue? sincerely, Claudy

Teaching kids to disrespect life is tragic. Why can't we just leave the animals alone and find productive and positive things to teach our kids?

What is going on in this country for someone to think it a good idea to kill another being to raise funds for a MUSIC field trip. No wonder there are so many school shootings. People who have no problems harming animals have no problems harming humans later on in life. What a great school system to get the ball rolling!

I thought schools were suppose to be against gun violence? Not only would the riffle be used on bears but possibly other creatures too. Why not a basket raffle instead?

The very fact that the school board members see nothing wrong with this raffle is a testament to their lack of values and shallow moral character. Are they all hunters at Noble High School? Do they really think its ok to teach others its a good thing to hunt down a bear to pay for a trip to NY that the kids' parents should be paying for? Is this a poor school district in Maine where hunting is a daily thing? Its a shame that school districts like this exist, what will it do to the future of all those kids who graduate or don't graduate from Noble? Where is the pride and self-respect of earning money by multiple fundraising activities and going out and working hard for that money for a trip you want to take? A bear hunt raffle does not belong in the school. Nothing associated with guns belongs in any school. Do we need more school shootings? Teach your kids that hunting down an innocent animal by baiting him with jelly donuts is wrong. Are they all poorly educated in the Noble school district?

it is illegal to: C. Use any live animal as a premium, fund-raising device, prize or award or use any live animal in a raffle, contest, game or promotion except as authorized by law or rule; [1997, c. 690, §39 (AMD).]

This truely sickens me to think that beautiful bears should be hunted, so money can be raised to send students on a trip . Don't take a life get a life and use your imagination to raise funds other than being sick individuals . WHY SHOULD THESE ANIMALS SUFFER ON YOUR BEHALF.

There are much more humane and educationally appropriate ways to raise money- this raffle strikes me as the equivalent of raffling off a day of front-line combat to shoot insurgents! What kind of culture are we promoting, when schools sponsor gun-based activities as we are in the middle of a very controversial war. Rather, why don't we let parents, family and friends take care of exploring the "to hunt, or not to hunt" decision for their children and keep it out of the schools. A better raffle from an educational standpoint might be a trip to the Smithsonian.

This type of thing is what creates your school shootings. Try teaching compassion for a change and be pleasantly surprised
