Stop school bear hunt raffle - nonresidents

Target:
MSAD #60 Superintendent and School Board
Sponsored by:

Scorning the usual bake sales, car washes, etc., Noble High School in North Berwick, Maine, is sponsoring a bear hunting raffle to raise money to send music students on a trip to NYC. In light of the number of tragic school shootings that have taken place in the U.S., for a school to associate itself with any activity supporting guns is shockingly inappropriate. Bear hunting is particularly cruel and inhumane in Maine, where unsportsmanlike practices are used that have been outlawed in every other US state.

Do we want to teach our young people to achieve their aspirations through hard work so that they value their own achievements or do we want to teach them to use guns and the exploitation of animals? Students themselves are selling tickets for this event and the owner of a chain of bear hunting camps in Maine is reaping the reward of advertising this school connection in hunting magazines sold nationwide and abroad. Although the alternative of photographing a bear is allegedly offered, this isn't mentioned in the web advertising nor have ads been placed in photography or travel magazines.

Please help ACAR in our efforts to call a halt to this ill-conceived and unacceptable fundraising attempt. If you are not a resident of Berwick, Lebanon, or North Berwick, Maine, please sign this petition. If you are an MSAD #60 resident, please sign our petition for residents at

We, the undersigned, ask that you put a halt to the Noble High School bear hunt raffle and require the school to find other means of fundraising now and in the future. Although we are not residents of MSAD #60, we are appalled that any school district would sponsor such an inhumane and inappropriate event.

WHAT IS AMERICA TEACHING ITS CHILDREN. THIS IS THE MOST PRIMITIVE, IRRESPONSIBLE, DISGUSTING THING I HAVE EVER LEARNED. I have lost much respect for America because they allow these things to happen. Im not the only one, since globally, your economy is going down. PLEASE, for all our sakes, this must never take place.

What are they teaching kids???? Killing animals is FUN!

This whole ordeal is a disgrace. I would never send my child to a school that endorses the killing of an animal for the sole reason of raising money for a trip. An animal should have it's life taken away so some kids can go on a trip? That's disgusting. There are so many better ways to do a fundraiser that may actually benefit the world (or at least not hurt/kill anything) than the murder of an animal unfortunate enough to be targeted for this "fundraiser."

There is no reason to encourage this kind of backward thinking in our children. As a father of a 17 year old, I would change her school if this is what the school was encouraging for fund raising. Please join the majority of Maine people and reject encouraging bear hunting. If you would like to see our non-partisan survey concerning bear hunting please contact me. It should help you make an enlightened decision to cancel this type of fund raising.

What kind of minds must these teachers and school officials have? They thought this was a good way to teach young people to raise money? Making a trip ticket more important than teaching respect for life is inexplicable! We need our future generations to be concerned for the wildlife we have left, and this school is teaching them that it's okay to raffle off their lives. Shame, shame, shame. Stop this raffle at once...

what on earth this stupid school is doing by sponsoring a bear killing raffle so that some of their music students can go to new york? teaching kids killing bears or shooting bears or any animal for fun/entertainment is wrong! and there is no place in any place of learning to teach killing on any thing is fine!

This is one of the MOST INHUMANE things I have ever heard. Do our youngsters now days have ANY respect for life at all. This despicable raffle should be ended and students who started it should be order to seek mental counseling.

This is definitely not acceptible!!!I totally agree that this has no place in the schools!Bear hunting is inhumane and is not something I want our children to take pleasure in as a fund raiser! Please look for a FUN fundraiser.

I am totally against this. Anything connected to guns and killing should not be linked to education and schools. If students decide to hunt animals, it should be on their own time and not taught in schools that it is something that is "good."

It is completely inappropriate for schools to promote hunting. It is especially bad to promote bear hunting because all bear hunting is trophy hunting. No one kills bears to feed their family- it's just killing for thrills. It is common knowledge that children who enjoy killing animals are likely to become violent adults. The one thing all serial killers have in common is a history of cruelty to animals as children. Schools should be teaching children how to become good citizens, not killers.

I understand the need to raise $$ for school projects, but promotion of bear hunting - which in Maine is particularly inhumane and out-dated - and any recreation associated with guns is ridiculous. Do we need to have a school shooting in Maine before we become proactive????

I AM NOT an anti hunter. However, it is decidedly so that when we set out food for these foraging, always starving animals and then ambush them, come on, that is a hunt only in the mind of chimpanzees! The same goes for hunting Bear with dogs, the dogs tree the Bears, the chimpanzees shoot the bears out of the trees. Wow, sporting! Please, hunters I do not mean to offend you with the Chimp analogy, but, if the shoe fits. Sincerely, Intellectual Man....

Can't you teach our schools how to respect animals & nature instead of killing all of God's creations? Do something that we all would be proud of. Use your heads...have photo shoot contests, plant trees, learn to live "green" teach about solar, wind turbine or go on camping trips. Please don't kill the bears!! They are to beautiful!

I cannot express how appalled I am with this specific, so-called educational institution. While people world-wide are responsibly working to teach our youth sensible, humane and intelligent stewardship of our world, Noble High School is promoting an unintelligent, cruel and irresponsible slaughter of a living being... to fund a field trip! Not only will the students suffer a loss of values by participating in this despicable activity, but also the state and the specified cities will lose many thousands of dollars in tourist spending this year and in the future. This story will be shared with travel agencies, churches and conservation groups across the nation and around the world. I'm horrified and as a planner will make the first financial bite by eliminating Berwick, Lebanon, and North Berwick from a huge organized group vacation scheduled for this spring. "OUCH" to your lodging facilities, food providers and tourist trade! Obviously a "photo ONLY" opportunity would be acceptable. Eyes accross the nation are watching Noble High School and the State of Maine!

This is an absolute disgrace. I can't believe that people have the nerve to try and make money from animal cruelty, especially for a childrens school trip! There are many other ways to get the money needed and this is no way to raise a child. There is no respect for nature and life at all here.
