No kill Shelter in Garland Texas in memory of Cody Edwards

No animal deserves to die!

"No-Kill" philosophy refers to finding an alternative to euthanasia as a means of controlling the pet population for otherwise healthy animals.

Cody Wade Edwards looked like the quintessential California male straight out of central casting. His handsome face was framed by a flowing blond mane, and his appearance was further softened by his obvious love of animals. But Cody never reached his full potential. He was killed in an auto accident when he was 21 years old. The memory of his life and his potential – along with his caring for animals – lives on in Garland thanks to his grandmother, Maryann Wickersham. She launched a one-woman campaign to save the lives of pets at the Garland municipal animal shelter. “This is what he wanted me to do,” said Maryann. “I’m doing this for Cody.” What does it take to save the lives of shelter pets? A strong work ethic. A soft heart coupled with thick skin. An unquenchable thirst for truth. A grandmother’s instinct backed by an unstoppable will to succeed. Fortunately for Garland, that’s all wrapped in a single tidy package adorned with an ever-present hat. It may be a solitary effort for the time being, but Cody’s memory is the fuel for Maryann’s solo campaign. It began when she discovered a spay/neuter grant that was going largely unused. Since the idea was to get over 1,000 pets altered at no cost to qualifying Garland residents, Maryann took it upon herself to go door-to-door to inform pet owners of the spay/neuter offer. She was so successful at spreading the word that the idea of a petition began to make sense. “Some people told me I was the only one in Garland who wants a No Kill shelter,” Maryann said. “I’m out to prove them wrong.” She said she was inspired by other No Kill communities surrounding Garland. Rockwall, Rowlett, Royse City and Seagoville have save rates far in excess of 90%. Arlington and others save at least 85% of their shelter pets. Maryann is convinced that Garland can have the same type of success. As she knocks on another door to ask for signatures on her No Kill petition, Maryann introduces herself by saying, “I’m here for Cody.” Sign Maryann’s online petition at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/925/555/535/make-the-garland-texas-animal-shelter-no-kill/.
