Australia, New Technology Can Save Swimmers From Sharks!

The thirteen shark attacks off Australia's beaches is bad news for sharks, whose existence is already threatened by overfishing and loss of resources. But new technology offers hope in keeping the peace between sharks and people. New South Wales is talking about implementing shark-alert buoys that would alert lifeguards to evacuate the water on ocean beaches. The buoy also connects with smart phones, so swimmers can exercise their own vigilance and exit the water if a shark is present.

This measure would save people from sharks and go a good distance to protecting sharks from vengeful slaughter. Only last year, Australia sanctioned a shark cull that involved the baiting and massacre of an already endangered species. Obviously, reducing shark attacks is a better solution. Please join me in asking the government of New South Wales to immediately implement this new shark-detecting technology--before the end of this tourist season.

Dear New South Wales Parliament Members:

We the undersigned are delighted to hear that new technology offers hope in the ongoing conflict between ocean swimmers and sharks. We believe that sharks are innocent creatures whose habitat has been badly compromised and who have been persecuted by senseless slaughter--such as your shark cull last year. Shark-detecting buoys offer lifeguards some warning about the presence of sharks. The lifeguards can then evacuate the waters and save swimmers from injury. Swimmers, likewise, can protect themselves by tuning their smart phones to the buoy and receiving alerts. We urge you to immediately deploy these buoys on all your beaches before there are any more shark attacks.
