In jail for attacking dogs ...... Release Balam, the jaguar of Playa del Carmen!

While the population of jaguars, endangered species, continues to decline, environmental authorities in Mexico placed in indefinite captivity specimens which some consider a"problem".

Balam, the jaguar from Playa del Carmen was eating its natural prey and living in his house, the jungle, until one day some people came to live right there. These people also began to hunt the animals he use to eat. Then the jaguar found that dogs that were with this people, were easy prey and began to eat them. People, despite living illegally in the jungle, requested the authorities to move the animal or they would kill him. Those authorities moved him and after a few months the jaguar found again a community living in the jungle. Now he found sheep to eat. People complained and asked authorities to capture the jaguar and leave him locked up.

Such events happen often and will continue to happen more and more because every day more people invade the jungle, cut the trees down, illegally hunt native species and replace them with their domestic animals ...... and the authorities, that are suppose to ensure the conservation of resources, flora and wildlife, pretend to put in captivity every jaguar that becomes such a problem.
If that is the solution, then we can declare jaguars extinct from Mexico ... ....the country of the "jaguar warriors!!"

Let us ask our authorities to commit to finding real solutions that preserve jaguars. Do not let this or any other jaguar left to live its life in a confinement because of invasions to jaguar habitat or neglect of people to look after their domestic animals properly.

Please email the following to: Jorge Maksabedian DVM, jorge.maksabedian@semarnat.gob.mx Director General of Wild Life and let him know your feelings

We, the undersigned ask you to release the jaguar of Playa del Carmen kept at the moment in Tekash’s rehab center. That your department seek for solutions according to the conservation and respect of the life of every jaguar. Killing or imprisoning of animals are not solutions for conservation of the declining population of jaguars.

Update #1vor 8 Jahren
To everyone: thank you. Balam is alive but is still sadly caged. Tomorrow we are filing in Supreme Court in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico a case that says that we citizens have a right to a clean and healthy environment which includes animals.
Jorge Maksabedian, director of SEMARNAT, did rule to release him, but the Mayan community sued this decision so he could stay caged. They want to charge money for to see him.
I will let everyone know what is the outcome.
