Ask your MP to vote against fox hunting

  • by: Beth Granter

Fox hunting involves setting a pack of dogs on a fox and then chasing it on horseback. Once caught, the dogs will rip apart the fox until it dies a horrific death.

Hunting wild mammals (foxes, hare, mink etc.) with dogs was banned in England and Wales by the Hunting Act in 2004.

The new Prime Minister of the UK, David Cameron, plans to have a free vote on repealing the act. If this happens, animal welfare in the UK will be set back years, and many innocent animals will die an unnecessary and violent death as a result.

IF YOU LIVE IN SCOTLAND — or know anyone who does — it's even more important to sign and share this petition. The SNP have not yet decided whether to vote on this issue, but have promised to vote against repealing the act if they do. Hunting is already banned in Scotland and this won't affect Scottish animals. Please sign to ask your MP to vote to save foxes in England and Wales. We need the SNP to vote on this.

Campaigners from the League Against Cruel Sports have vowed to defend the anti-hunting legislation with a cross-party campaign.

"The Hunting Act is the most successful piece of wild animal welfare legislation in history and it is supported by 80% of the British public,” Director of Campaigns Tom Quinn said.

“No government, regardless of the party they represent, should ignore such strong public feeling. The Hunting Act is a testimony to the fact that we are a nation of animal lovers and we have an international reputation for our hatred of cruelty in the name of sport. We call upon all MPs to listen to their constituents and vote to keep hunting illegal."

Labour and Green MPs are likely to vote to keep the ban. Labour said, "we believe that causing defenceless animals to suffer in the name of sport has no place in a civilised society. But just as we celebrate the Hunting Act, the Tories plan to repeal it."

Dear [MP],

David Cameron plans to have a free vote on repealing the Hunting Act of 2004, which banned hunting wild mammals (foxes, hare, mink etc.) with dogs in England and Wales. If this happens, animal welfare in the UK will be set back years, and many innocent animals will die an unnecessary and violent death as a result.

Will you vote to keep the ban on fox hunting?

Whilst hunting is already banned in Scotland and this won't affect Scottish animals, we need all MPs to vote to save foxes in England and Wales. Please urge the SNP to vote on this.

Fantastic news! Yesterday I emailed Nicola Sturgeon, leader of the SNP, to urge her party to stand up for foxes in the vote planned for tomorrow. Today she announced that due to "overwhelming demand" from people in England, the SNP would vote against the amendment to relax the fox hunting ban. This caused Cameron to delay the vote until autumn - so the battle is not over. The SNP have now pledged to try to tighten the Scottish anti-hunt laws. Keep an eye out for a petition in support of that.
