According to NPR News, Pharmaceutical Giant Merck has reversed their commitment to provide low cost lifesaving Rotavirus vaccines to impoverished third world children.
Rotavirus vaccine is a vaccine used to protect against rotavirus infections, which are the leading cause of severe diarrhea among young children. The vaccines prevent 15–34% of severe diarrhea in the developing world and 37–96% of severe diarrhea in the developed world. This corporate decision has been made at the same time Merck is opening vast new markets for the vaccine in China, at much higher prices, apparantly providing much greater profits.
The optics are not good for Merck. The appearance is that they are willing to withdraw affordable life saving medications, which could lead to the unnecessary and painful deaths of many thousands of destitute children in impoverished third world countries. Their decision is apparantly made in pursuit of ever greater profits with no consideration to the suffering of innocents.
Sign this petitoin to let Merck know this is an unacceptable corporate move and encourage them to do the socially responsible and moral thing by reversing their decisions and continuing to provide low cost Rotavirus vaccine to impoverished children.
