Passengers on Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 are calling pilot Tammie Jo Shults "an American hero" — and we couldn't agree more. After an engine blew out at 30,000 feet, Shults brought 148 passengers to safety during an emergency landing at Philadelphia International Airport. Sadly, one passenger was killed during the incident, but Shults' strength under pressure prevented an even larger tragedy from occurring.
But Tammie Jo Shults'
heroism goes back much further. During the 1980s, Shults faced years of discrimination and discouragement as she worked towards her dream of becoming a pilot. After being rejected by the Air Force because she was a woman,
Shults persisted and was eventually accepted by the U.S. Navy, becoming one of its first female fighter pilots and working her way to liutenant commander.Shults is the kind of hero young girls need, which is why we're calling on Mattel to honor Tammie Jo Shults by creating a Barbie after her.Please join in telling Mattel that we want a Tammie Jo Shults Barbie!
