Demand Trump End His Damaging Trade War With China

Per his usual strategy of never admitting fault, Trump has opted to dig in his heels amid his disastrous trade war with China. Despite assurance that "trade wars are easy to win," this one has proven anything but for the president—but Americans are the ones suffering the consequences.

The White House has launched a campaign trying to paint Trump's imposition of tariffs as beneficial to the United States, claiming that the revenue generated from the tariffs is going into our Treasury while China bears the brunt of the damage.

But that is not true.

When the US imposes tariffs, that essentially becomes an import tax which is passed on to American businesses, which is passed onto American consumers. That's how it works—if an American company wants to buy the product, they're the ones who pay the increased cost. Those companies then typically raise the prices of their goods to account for the increased cost.

In other words, the cost of the tariff falls on the American consumer. When Trump says that 25% of $250 billion is going directly to the US Treasury, that might be true, but guess whose wallets that money is coming from (here's a hint: it's not China's).

Consider, too, that when the costs of Chinese products go up to account for that import tax, that other competing companies can raise the prices on THEIR products, too, since there's not as steep of price competition from China. In other words, less competition means higher prices for consumers since.

Tired of all the winning yet?

This trade war has been an unmitigated disaster, wreaking havoc on the soybean industry, on farmers, on the stock market, and on billions of dollars of goods that are now more expensive, all as the result of Trump's ego. Enough is enough.

We, the undersigned, demand that an immediate end be put to Trump's misguided trade war with China. The American people are tired of cleaning up amid Trump's inability to govern.
