Demand Hawaii Electric be investigated for their negligence leading up to the Maui wildfire!

Hawaii Electric is being scrutinized after a massive fire leveled the town of Lahaina in Maui, after delaying improvements to their grid that would have likely prevented a tragedy of such scale. Now, hundreds of potential plaintiffs have approached a firm to join their lawsuit — and to ensure this never happens again — but we need Hawaii Electric to be fully investigated for their part in these fires, and give Hawaii residents the answers and security they deserve.

Hawaii Electric's own records show that they were fully aware of the danger the grid posed, including a funding request saying the possibility of their utilities "causing a wildfire ignition is significant." They even said the funding was crucial to ensuring their facilities were not "the origin or a contributing source of ignition for a wildfire." Despite receiving the funding, to the tune of $189 million, Hawaii Electric did not act — now 101 victims have died in a historically deadly fire, likely due to their negligence.

Hawaii Electric provides electricity to 95% of the state. They had every opportunity, and millions of dollars, to protect the massive scope of people they serve — and they failed miserably. It is a total disregard for the sanctity of life, and there must be repercussions.

The Maui fires were predicted. Resources were provided to fix the problem, and ignored. California has deployed a "public power shutoff plan" when winds get too high in the face of increasing wildfires, and Hawaii Electric has had years to mimic them. Even after a 2018 fire that decimated 20 Maui homes, no improvements were made to the grid. This was a preventable tragedy.
