The Goldman Environmental Prize is considered the top award in the world for grassroots environmentalists - a great recognition of activism against corporate foes who are reckless with natural resources.
Unfortunately, in recent years two of the Goldman recipients have been murdered, and a third saw six of his colleagues killed. Over 200 environmental leaders are killed each year, usually because moneyed interests find it easier to literally slaughter their adversaries than worry about the planet.
For this reason, we ask the Goldman Environmental Foundation to extend protection to its winners whose lives are in danger. Beyond recognizing the work these activists have done, we need to ensure they're around to continue working on behalf of the environment.
