Donald Trump doesn't get to rename places shared with other countries whenever he feels like it.
He may prefer "Lake America" to Lake Ontario—or he might just need ANY distraction from his profoundly crappy performance.
But when Google goes along with him and changes the name for American users of Google Maps, that's dangerous. It's Google saying: "You don't have the power to rename this lake for the rest of the world—but we'll stand aside while you pretend that you do. We'll even give you directions."
Google is big enough and powerful enough to fight this. Yes, the company could face grief and retaliation from the pettiest president ever. But this is precisely the time to stand firm against authoritarianism and defend the truth.
Lake Ontario is Lake Ontario. It has been for centuries—and Donald Trump's wounded ego doesn't get to erase that history.
