Cineworld, it's time to use compostable straws

If you've been captivated by BBC's Blue Planet then you will agree that plastic is really bad news for our oceans and for the planet. Millions of straws are used every day around the world. Many of these are used for just a few minutes, then are simply thrown away. In fact plastic straws are one of the top 10 items found in beach clean ups, polluting the water and killing marine life. If we don't act now, by the year 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

Walk into a cinema and you'll be hard pushed to find someone that isn't holding a bottled drink or drink with a straw in. If we put pressure on a large corporation like Cineworld to scrap non compostable straws then hopefully others will follow.

Biodegradable straws can still be made of petroleum. Biodegradable simply means that they will break down into tiny bits of plastic, but the plastic remains. Compostable straws, on the other hand, are made from plant materials, and when they break down it's no more harmful than a piece of seaweed breaking down.

Cineworld, we ask that you scrap all plastic straws and switch to compostable alternatives.

Hello everyone,

Thanks again for signing my petition asking Cineworld to ditch single use plastic straws. I have had another message from Cineworld HQ (below). As much as this is a step in the right direction, I feel they can do better. I will keep pushing!

"Hi Nicole

Just a follow up to my previous correspondence.

Cineworld is always looking for new ways to reduce our environmental impact and single-use plastic consumption in our cinemas. As part of this process, just this week we have announced that we are taking part in an initiative to remove all plastic cutlery and straws from our condiment bars in Starbucks concessions at our cinemas. Additional straws and cutlery will be available on request. In addition to this we are continuing to work with our respective suppliers and partners on a number of projects to look at alternatives where appropriate.

Kind Regards
Charles"

Hello everyone,

After weeks of pushing I finally got through to someone at Cineworld HQ and have had the following response:

"This is just a short note to acknowledge receipt of your petition.
We will further respond once we have considered this in context of our wider approaches to waste and recycling."

I will keep pushing and my final update to you all will hopefully be one filled with good news!

Thank you so much to everyone who has signed my petition urging Cineworld to scrap single-use plastic straws. After lots of digging I have finally been given the contact details of the Head of Retail at Cineworld HQ and will be speaking with him about the next steps. Thank you again for signing. Please keep sharing the petition so we can reach our target of 100k! Nicole x
