It turns out our mattresses have been poisoning us.
Toxic chemicals, including from flame retardants and petroleum-based foams,
have been leaching into the air around our bodies while we sleep. Then we breathe it in every night when we're in our most vulnerable of states. And it's not just adults who are being poisoned by their mattresses. It's also affecting
children, infants, and newborns.Sign the petition to tell U.S. regulators that mattresses should not be allowed to include toxic chemicals! The data is, frankly, terrifying. New research shows that, not only are children's and baby's mattresses dangerous for them, but also, the toxic chemical exposure is partially triggered by the children's body warmth. Yes, the hazardous materials are already there regardless. But a new study has found that "the warmth and weight of the sleeping child could increase the off-gassing of the toxicants." That means the chemicals then are
released into the air around the child,
which the child breathes in while sleeping.
And the impact of this toxic leaching is astounding. Chemicals like phthalates and VOCs have repeatedly been shown to have "significant developmental and biological effects," including causing
brain development issues, asthma and other respiratory problems, endocrine disruption, thyroid conditions, obesity, reproductive issues, heart and cardiovascular problems, cancer, and even premature death. With a list that long, one major question remains:
why have corporations been allowed to get away with this? And, there are follow-up questions: Why have they been allowed to use chemicals like these, that have effects like this, for such a long time? Why weren't these chemicals banned? Why were corporations allowed to keep poisoning us and our children?
This affects everyone. All of us sleep. We spend one-third of our lives in our beds. Even if you're unconscious, absorbing these chemicals still affects you.We must join together to demand that U.S. federal agencies immediately ban these harmful substances and increase safety regulations for mattresses for adults and children! Sign the petition!
