This petition is for all parents, homeowners and tax payers in and around school district 89 in Glen Ellyn, IL. This petition was created as a reaction to Dr. Perdue's decision to allow large class sizes in first grade, and not budgeting an aide as support in Mrs. Carlson's class. Mrs. Carlson's class of 26 students exceeds the average IL State K & 1st grade class size of 21(ref:IL Government News Network Site, 6-21-2006).
Furthermore, her class size exceeds the average IL K-12 class size of 23.5 students per class(ref:PERI Website, Robert Pollin 4-2009). Statistics continue to show us that it is imperative for K-3 students to belong to smaller class sizes to better individualized attention and education.
(Research)We can take a stand and insist an aid for Mrs. Carlson today, as well as show Dr. Perdue that it is unacceptable to allow any K-3 classes to be oversized and have no support of an aide in the future. I have spoken to Mrs. Carlson as well as Mrs. Warke, the principal, regarding this matter and they support me in this endeavor. Please sign today and we will take this to Dr. Perdue. We, the undersigned people, request an aide for Mrs. Carlson's oversized first grade class today. Although the ccsd89 website shows that you "feel that you have addressed the imbalance of class sizes in a way that had least possible impact on students" (Follow-up Q&A spring 2009 community forum), research has shown that you have done the opposite which is impacting our youngest students in learning their fundamental building blocks of education.
On the same follow-up Q&A, you mentioned that "the district has trimmed expenses and will continue to do so for 2010-2011." We need to take a stand today to ensure that our future K-3 students will not be impacted the way our children are today. Please consider an aide today for Mrs. Carlson, and a better classroom structure for these kids next year and years to come. Thank you for taking time to read this letter and petition.
